GAMES PEOPLE PLAY.
Stop playing the same old games. Start seeing what's actually going on.
A 5-week class with Melissa & Steve
Have you ever found yourself having the exact same argument for the 47th time?
Or noticed that certain people seem to push your buttons in a way nobody else can? That you keep attracting the same kind of relationship? That one conversation somehow turns into a courtroom drama, a guilt trip, a rescue mission, or a three-day silent treatment?
What if these aren't random bad interactions?
What if there's a game being played—and you don't even know you're playing?
So, what exactly is a psychological game?
In his classic book Games People Play, psychiatrist Eric Berne explored the recurring patterns people use to interact with one another.
Beneath the surface of everyday conversations, we often find predictable scripts, hidden motives, unspoken expectations, and familiar payoffs.
We complain.
We rescue.
We blame.
We withdraw.
We provoke.
We play the victim, the persecutor, or the hero.
And somehow, everybody ends up right where they started.
The fascinating part? These games can feel completely justified while we're playing them. We think we're reacting to the other person, when we're often participating in a familiar pattern of our own.
The first step to changing a game is realizing you're in one.
What we'll explore together
Over five weeks, we'll get curious about the interpersonal games that keep us stuck in repetitive, frustrating, and sometimes downright ridiculous dynamics.
We'll explore:
Recognizing the games. Spot the familiar scripts playing out in your relationships, family, friendships, and everyday interactions.
The hidden payoff. What do we get from a pattern, even when we say we hate it?
Victim, villain, rescuer. Notice how we get pulled into roles—and how quickly those roles can switch.
Your part in the pattern. Move beyond blaming the other person and discover where your own assumptions, expectations, and reactions keep the game going.
Getting off the merry-go-round. Experiment with new ways of responding instead of automatically delivering your usual lines.
We'll use relatable examples, real-life scenarios, discussion, and plenty of opportunities to recognize these patterns in action.
And yes, there's a good chance you'll catch yourself doing something you've spent years complaining about other people doing.
It's okay. We've all been there.
This class is for you if...
You keep having the same arguments with the same people.
You find yourself overexplaining, defending, rescuing, blaming, or walking on eggshells.
You can see other people's patterns more easily than your own.
You feel like certain people have an uncanny ability to push your buttons.
You want better relationships without needing everyone else to change first.
You're ready to get curious about your own behavior without turning self-awareness into another reason to beat yourself up.
The goal isn't to become a perfect person.
It's to become a more aware participant in your own life.
You don't have to take every bait. You don't have to deliver every predictable reaction. You don't have to keep playing a role just because you've been playing it for 30 years.
Once you can recognize the game, you have a chance to do something different.
And sometimes, the most liberating thing you can do is laugh at the ridiculousness of a pattern that used to run your life.
Five weeks. Real-life examples. A lot of light bulbs.
